Eight young groups are set to take to the stage in a battle of the bands competition in Pontypridd next week.

'The Gathering' 2010 Battle of the Bands is a regional competition co-ordinated by the South Wales New Music Forum. The contest, which will be held at the Muni Arts Centre on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, is open to bands with all members under the age of 18 and in full-time education.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services' SONIG programme is co-ordinating RCT's heat, when bands taking to the stage will be:

Ladies Love a Super Hero,
The Missive,
The Special Editions,
The Kix,
Portal,
Lucy Saved Dave,
High Demand
and Indie-go Modem.

The competition is supported by the South Wales New Music Forum, which comprises nine South Wales local authorities, and Rockschool, a leading European rock and pop music exam board.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, Cllr Robert Bevan, said: "There are so many gifted young musicians in Rhondda Cynon Taf - and this competition is the ideal way to showcase their talent. We wish all the bands competing the best of luck and hope they enjoy the night."

The Gathering final will take place at Bridgend Recreation Centre on Saturday, April 24 from 1pm-10pm.

Bands who make it to the final will be judged by big names in the Welsh music industry to win the top prize of £500 and recording time in music studios. They will also win a professional photoshoot, music magazine interviews and get to play on the same bill as the final's headline act, The Guns
Two runners-up will each receive £250 and studio recording time. All three top bands will have promoter's billing opportunities. For more information, go to www.gathering.celticaradio.com
