A parade highlighting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights has been staged in Cardiff for the first time as part of the annual Mardi Gras celebration.

Organisers called on businesses, organisations and individuals to take part.

The main event was being held at Cooper's Field, where singer Heather Small was one of the headliners.

The theme of this year's Mardi Gras was "visibility increases understanding and reduces fear".

One of the organisers, Richard Newton, explained the aims of the 2012 festival, while Cardiff teacher Mark Lewis explained a project featured on the day, aimed at tackling homophobia in schools.

I attended the Mardi Gras for the 3rd year running. I thought this year was a lot better than last year as it was headlined by X-Factor runner-up Marcus Collins.

He performed a number of his songs to the crowd and he was also joined by Heather Small.

Around about 20,000 people attended this years event!!

Mardi Gras is a free event held annually in Cooper's Field, Cardiff on September 1st.
