Clarkson: Welsh Language Should Be Abolished

How would you feel if Britain became a single language area?

Well, that seems to be the dream of one Jeremy Clarkson, the journalist and writer who's best known for his role on the BBC show Top Gear.

In his most recent column in The Sun, he questions the need of certain languages, after it has become known that Britain is becoming the least multilingual nation in Europe.

After ranting over the French language, Clarkson stated "I think we are fast approaching the time when the United Nations should start to think seriously about abolishing other languages." He also stated that there was no need for anyone to learn a new language due to the fact that nearly everyone can speak English.

He then turned his attention on the Welsh language. "What's the point of Welsh for example?" He added, "All it does is provide a silly maypole around which a bunch of hotheads can get all nationalistic."

As you can guess, this did not sit right to those who believe strongly in the Welsh language, a bit like playing Justin Bieber during a Metalica concert.

“Jeremy Clarkson wants to bring everyone down to his own level of ignorance," said Dr Robyn Lewis, former Archdruid of Wales. He continued, stating that "He seems to be having fantasies. It is our national language and that’s that. It is the language spoken in Wales long before English was heard of.”

Dr Lewis states that the only reason that Clarkson wrote what he had wrote was to gain publicity. “Welsh is an equal language with English in Wales – it therefore should be treated equally, it’s as simple as that. I despise people like Jeremy Clarkson and his ilk." He also stated that this is nothing new, as the Welsh language has been attacked for several centuries.

Though, it's not just Dr Lewis fighting back. There has been an official complaint sent to the BBC via Plaid Cymru MP Jonathan Edwards.

Not only that, Huw Stephens entered the row over this claim by posing a sarcastic comment on Twitter to his colleague. The Cardiff-born Radio 1 DJ wrote the following on his Twitter account, who currently has over 45,000 followers.

"Diolch am y sylwadau caredig Jeremy Clarkson! Gwerthfawrogi dy feddylie am ein iaith :) Ni wir angen mewnbwn a syniadau dyn fel ti! Sws mawr."

Or, for those that cannot speak Welsh, "Thanks for your kind ideas Jeremy Clarkson. I appreciate your thoughts about our language. We really need the input and thoughts of a man like you. Big kiss."

The BBC have stated that they will not comment on the situation, as “The BBC will not comment on comments made by Jeremy Clarkson in his Sun column.”

What a ridiculous thing to say! Languages are teriffically important!
I love the English language (although not what it's becoming, but that's another matter). I equally love the Welsh language, even though my proficiency is not nearly as great. I've also started learning French.

So one day Clarkson, I'll be insulting you in three languages, and you'll be sat there with your "OMG"s and your" ROFLcopters" and I shall laugh.

Despite not being able to speak Welsh, I think that's really stupid what he's said. The only reason I can't speak Welsh is because we don't get that much of an opportunity to learn it in the schools I've been in (my primary and secondary). If I knew how to speak Welsh, I certainly would speak in the language more.

Oh and I love the Justin Bieber bit.

I thought I'd be controversial and say that I actually love Jeremy Clarkson...haha! however, that comment was ignorant and he was, basically talking pure dribble! *continues to watch Top Gear*

“Jeremy Clarkson wants to bring everyone down to his own level of ignorance,"

There's nothing more to say on the matter. He's bigoted and ignorant, and can't possibly comprehend the history of Wales or our language. From what he said, he'd scrap every language. If everyone can speak English what's the point in any other language existing?

Got something to say?
