Rhondda Cynon Taff’s Youth Mayor makes her debut at the opening of the new Sainsbury’s store.

The Youth Mayor is a Rhondda Cynon Taff's initiative to give young people more of a voice and presence in local democracy.

Jenna Caldridge, the second Youth Mayor of R.C.T was invited to attend a “First-Look” at Pontypridd’s new £47 million store. Along with other delegates, the police, schools and local residents were treated to an exclusive tour around the store and its milestone features.

The new development includes a traditional Sainsbury’s layout with all the essential as well as the first Sainsbury to stock exotic fruit, a frozen food department, a home ware section and to stock a wider range of electrical goods, such as cameras.

During the tour a buffet was provided with each product on the table being locally sourced, from Penderyn wine, to Caerphilly cheese. A spokesperson told us that Sainsbury is involved in a scheme to train young farmers: “They are the future of our food, and we want them to be trained and ready to be reasonable and passionate about food.”

Jenna, pictured with Pontypridd Towns’ Mayor, recently took the post of Youth Mayor after spending a year as the first Deputy Youth Mayor. She said: “I was made to feel very welcome and was well looked after. The new Sainsbury’s was very spacious, clean, stylish and eco-friendly. It also brings with it many job opportunities for young people.”
