Children in Rhondda Cynon Taf are being invited to take part in more pool-based activities this year, in the ‘2010 Challenge’.

Youngsters aged 16 and under are being encouraged to attend their local swimming pool 20 times and take part in 10 different activities throughout the year as part of the challenge.

Some of the activities on offer include learn to swim lessons, canoeing, aqua fun, personal survival skills and snorkelling. All of RCT’s swimming pools are taking part in the scheme at Aberdare, Abercynon, Bronwydd, Hawthorn, Llantrisant, Tylorstown, Ystrad (Rhondda) and Tonyrefail.

Children will be encouraged to record their attendances and those who complete the challenge will be eligible for a free three-month ‘more max’ leisure card. This card entitles the holder to access hundreds of pounds worth of activities at Rhondda Cynon Taf’s leisure centres and pools between January 2011 and March 2011.

Cllr Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said:  “This scheme aims to encourage children to participate more regularly in swimming and pool-based activities. We hope many youngsters will take up the challenge and enjoy the wide range of activities on offer.”

More details on the scheme are in the ‘moreswimming’ brochure, which is available now from local leisure centres and pools.
