Writing Content for Wicid

Wicid.tv is a magazine so like any other magazine the Editor will decide if the article is worthy to be included in the issue. Here are a few pointers on how to go about writing content so that you can ensure your article is chosen for the website.

What Can You Write About?

You can write ANYTHING. Creative freedom is Wicid’s middle name. If you want to write an in-depth feature on the state of the nation, go for it. If you want to write a poem on bats, ditto. We have articles on everything from post-it notes to politics. As the site covers all of Wales you may want to submit a story that could be relevant to you and young people living in Wales or your local area in Rhondda Cynon Taff.

How to Write a Meaty Article.

You can’t go far wrong if you remember the five W’s:

  1. Who?
  2. What?
  3. When?
  4. Where?
  5. Why?
  6. And How? (yes we know it doesn’t start with a ‘W’ but it’s also number 6 in a list of 5!)

But if you’re still stuck, check out the sheet called “Don’t Know How to Start?” for a really in-depth guide to writing.

How to know if your article is newsworthy?

Whatever it is you choose to write about, think about the impact of your story and why would other people be interested in it. Swine flu had impact because it affected a lot of people. Even if only one person was directly affected, many people will feel a strong emotional response to the story.

Remember that the more writing you do, the better you will get. After sometimes, when you are in the habit of writing, article writing will not seem as difficult as now!

How to Submit an Article

Once registered, and each time you submit something, you will receive a confirmation email. Our editorial team look at submissions, and if they’re appropriate, add them to the site.  Write your article as a Word document and save it as you go along.  Paste it in as news when ready. If your system crashes you’ll have lost everything if not saved.

What is a Featured Article?

The featured articles on the Wicid Homepage are chosen by the editorial team from all the items submitted. Not all articles can be featured, but if you want a chance of getting on there, remember that the featured articles tend to explore an issue and are less time-sensitive but no less newsworthy. They can be an effective way to write about complex issues. Features are full of interesting people, ideas, action and energy.

How to Submit a Video With Your Article

If you have a video that is relevant or specifically recorded for your news item (interview/sporting event/music/performance) you can include a YouTube URL link to it and it will be displayed next to your article.
