The coalition government is planning to sell-off all the forests in England… this is a terrible idea per se, but apparently it will also end up costing more money than it saves…

Pile pressure on the government to back down on this by writing to your MP…

Which you can do here…

This is what I wrote to the MP for Pontypridd…

I am writing to you concerning my deep dismay at the proposed sale of nationally own forests in England, which is being put forward by the coalition government.

Quite aside from the fact that figures have been produced by DEFRA, which suggest that the sale of the forests would cost more money that it saved, I believe that there are compelling moral reasons why the land should be kept out of the hand of private owners.

Once destroyed, ancient woodland is lost forever. These areas are amongst the richest habitats in the country, and their loss would have a devastating effect upon bio-diversity. Britain’s remaining forest cover is already negligible compared to other countries in Europe such as France and Germany, and as such, what remains should be cherished. If it belongs to the people, it can be preserved come what may, if it is sold, then this is no longer certain.

These forests are part of out heritage, part of our inheritance to our children and part of our national identity. From the tales of Robin Hood to Red Riding Hood, forests are enduring and magical places that have long captured our imaginations. If our grandchildren can only experience ancient forests through stories such as those, then our generation will be guilty of the most shocking and unforgivable betrayal.

Please write to your MP, even if you just scrawl “Don’t sell the Forests” then cut and paste it a million times.
