Detached Youth Work Team

Since our last article we have been really busy with summer and winter holiday activities. In the summer we had 2 Gorge Walking sessions (scrambling over rocks’ and jumping off ledges into the rivers for us non outdoor types).

A group of boys from Ystrad and Llwynypia took part in the Beat The Streets Programme delivered by Cardiff City Football Club where they had a tour of the stadium and took part in sessions to learn new football skills and tricks, before showing these skills off in a mini tournament. Trophies and certificates were presented to the boys by Cardiff’s newest (well in the summer) signings Craig Conway and Don Cowie and we were even on the BBC and ITV news!!! Certificates were presented to all players and the winning team received a trophy each so well done Callum Davies, Brandon Lewis and Corey Shephard. Corey Harries also received a trophy for the ‘Most Committed Player – well done Corey. Massive well done to all the boys who took part!

The fun didn’t stop there over the summer. We took a coach load of young people to Drayton Manor theme park for the day to enjoy the thrills of the rollercoaster’s and thankful the weather was lovely! However, the weather did not hold off for us when we started our graffiti project in Ystrad Skate Park! We did manage to get some graffiti done but this had to be re-scheduled for another day where all young people involved have made a fantastic job on the ramps!!

During the summer we also held a girls group where young girls had the opportunity to learn the importance of skin care, make up skills and nail art. The girls also enjoyed a fun day at the cinema!

Sticking to the fun stuff, it didn’t stop there! October half term was just as busy with a cinema trip, a ghost tour of Craig Yr Nos Castle to fully enjoy Halloween, as well as a Quad and Archery trip. Turns out we had some very scared young people (and staff) and some excellent quad bikers and archers in the area, who knew!!! We were once again lucky to receive some money from our holiday provision funding, and after much discussion with partner agencies, we decided on a paintball trip for the whole school cluster at Task Force in Cowbridge. The young people were lucky to have the opportunity to shoot a couple of local PCSOs, totally legal of course!! (Thanks Simon and Kerry). We also held a Detached Youth Work Team 5-a side tournament in Tylorstown sports centre where young people from all over RCT competed for the winning trophies – and who won? US of course!! Well done Keiran Eaves, Scott Pearce, Nathan English, Callum Nash, Corey Hughes and the legend of a goal keeper, Thomas Bownford!!!

We are now busy planning February Half Term and hopefully will have some fantastic activities running this week – watch this space!!

We continue to do our Detached Youth Work session during the evenings in the cluster, particularly focussing on some of the hot spot areas highlighted to us by PACT meetings and those are brought to our attention by the local PCSO’s. If you see us about come over and have a chat!!!

We are able to offer support to young people on all manner of things so if you think we can help, please contact us and we will try our best!

We have some projects that we are interested in running in the up and coming months, so if you are interested in getting involved then please let us know.

At the moment, we are trying to develop some training courses aimed for young people aged 16 – 25 to support you with future employability skills and to enhance your CV. We are currently looking for young people aged 16 – 25 who may be interested in any training course – please let us know what you would like to do and we will try our best to get this done.
