Destiny: Prologue

It was dark, the sky was black, and the only light was the tiny balls of light from the stars and the sudden flashes of lightning that split the sky in half. The lightning was soon followed by the loud clap of thunder that broke the eerie silence in the air.

The cold air raised goose bumps on Carey’s arms. She rubbed her arms to help her warm up but it didn’t work, she was freezing. She took deep breaths as she walked home. She had just left her friends party and it had gotten late; she hadn’t realised the time.

My parents are going to kill me, she thought. She kept walking as the cold sliced through her, freezing her bare arms even more.

She didn’t notice the shadow forming behind her, the darker space in the already-dark night. It took form, two long legs attached to a slim body and a head with dark, staring eyes.

The form started to lighten; light skin, scruffy brown hair and dark brown eyes appeared. One of its arms moved and a hand touched Carey’s shoulder – making her jump.

She spun around, the hair on the back of her neck rising. “Who are you?” she asked, fear cracking in her voice.

“Jake,” said the figure in front of her.

“What are you doing out here? Are you following me?”

“No,” the creature lied.

“Okay, then,” she spun around, confused, wary, and started walking again. She heard the footsteps behind her so she picked up the pace.

As she heard the footsteps speed up, she ran as fast as her legs could carry her and ran into an alleyway, hoping to lose the boy named ‘Jake’.

When she got into the alley she had to stop to catch her breath, and she listened to the quiet air that was only broken by the thunder. No footsteps.

She sighed in relief and straightened up. She lost him, if he really was following her. Maybe she was just being paranoid.

She shook her head and turned around and stopped in her tracks. It was impossible. No-one could do that without being heard. He was there in front of her, but how was he so fast? How did he manage to get there without her hearing?

She took a step back as he stepped forward. She tried to pull away when he reached for her but he was too strong; he pulled her to him and his face changed, his eyes turned red and his skin was full of cracks filled with deep red blood.
She tried to scream but it was too late – she felt the pain as her life drained from her body.
