Job Crisis!

Okay, so I’m a 16 year old girl with good GCSE grades looking for a part time job. It shouldn’t be hard to find somewhere that’d give me minimum wage for a couple of hours a week, right? Well, I know they said jobs are declining rapidly and all that jazz, but seriously? Not even a local Spar will hire me! Now, I know what you’re thinking… “It can’t be that hard, get off your lazy bum and look for one!”

First off, I have applied for at least 10 jobs within the space of a month. 5 of which are with ASDA. Not only that, I have applied at Dominos, Peacocks, Iceland, ShoeZone, Boots and Greggs.

I knew the application process wasn’t going to be fast, but I didn’t think it’d take this amount of time to look through applications and ask for an interview. I haven’t had any emails or phone calls and I am starting to have a massive breakdown. I need money from somewhere, even if it’s only minimum wage because my parents can’t keep dishing out money to me.

Not only that, I want to become more independent with my spending and earnings. I want to know how it feels to be my own person and start managing my own life. I know that sounds all grown up and kinda stupid, but I am fed up of mooching off my family. I really do not know how someone can be 30+ and be having to live off their mother or father’s money. I feel terrible now, so I have no idea how bad I’d feel if I was that age!

One thing that really angered me was when McDonalds in Tonypandy turned me down. They clearly stated that they have no work placements for that area. Although they said this, whenever you go to the restaurant there is hardly any staff on the tills. There is an average of 4 tills (6 including the Drive-Thru), 3 of which are hardly ever in use! The food takes forever to get to you and some of the people that work there are so miserable and unhygienic. I went to their restaurant the other day in Pandy, and I had mayonnaise and a hair in the box! Obviously I took it back straight away and had my money back, but it is just revolting! To think they let people this disorganised and moody in with open arms to serve customers is just really insulting. I’m 16 years of age and could do a better job than half of the dim-witted men and women that work there!

What confuses me most, is how it is so hard to get a part time job? It’s not someone the company will have to dish out an extreme amount of money to so I would have thought shops would prefer a part-time worker than a full-time worker. Another thing that baffles me is why companies don’t tend to take on teenagers. These are the people that actually won’t stay in that area for a life time, so it wouldn’t be a permanent position. I realise this isn’t very reliable and what not, but surely it’d cost them less if they had someone like that? Hmm…

I really don’t understand how all this works. I am completely new to the process. Already I am frothing at the mouth with my eye twitching every time I get turned down for a job…
