The next tournament in the 5×60 calendar was the Rhondda Cynon Taf-wide table tennis tournament. I, Leon Bansal – 5×60 officer of Tonyrefail School, took a team of Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils to compete against all other comprehensive schools within RCT.
The talent on show was superb, there were mixed teams of both boys and girls which was pleasing to see, Tonyrefail worked together as a team and did not drop a match all through the tournament. They had to play individually but support each other as the points were allocated as a team, both squads played outstanding all day and along with all the other schools took turns in scoring the matches they were not involved in which was a great idea.
After some hard fought matches, both squads from Tonyrefail School got to the finals and the outcome was victories to both squads in the final. This was a real team effort and the young people‘s attitudes and level of play throughout the day was superb.
The talent pool in Tonyrefail School is outstanding and seeing them take part and being fortunate enough to win these tournaments has been good for the young people. It gives them a chance to compete in a competitive environment and meet young people from other areas.
The competition was amazing and well organised by Rhys Rogers (5×60 Blaengwawr). There were so many teams that attended; it was a credit to himself how structured the day was. All 5×60 staff on the day helped out and took on certain roles to support Rhys to make sure it ran smoothly. Well done to Rhys.
