Sunday night/early hours of Monday morning saw one of the biggest award shows in the music industry. The Video Music Awards (or VMAs to you and I) were hosted in Los Angeles, California, and saw some of the biggest names in the world of music as well as new-kids-on-the-block all gather to celebrate the most loved music videos from the past year.
Like every award show, there’s always moments you go on to remember for a while and we’ve picked out the top five moments from this year’s ceremony.
1. Miley Cyrus invites a homeless person to collect her award
Instead of the usual booty-twerking, tongue waggling craziness we normally see (VMAs 2013 ft. Robin Thicke, we’re looking at you), Miley showed us her big heart when she won Video of the Year for ‘Wrecking Ball’ when she sent up homeless youth, Jesse, to accept her award on behalf of the homeless people in Hollywood. This was to raise awareness of Miley’s work with My Friend’s Place in Los Angeles to help the thousands of young homeless people.
2. 5 Seconds of Summer performing Amnesia
5 Seconds of Summer are one of our weaknesses and so seeing them perform their latest single, ‘Amnesia’, live at one of the biggest annual music events was pretty emotional and we loved every single moment. The 5SOS lads won a VMA for Best Lyric Video for their lyric video ‘Don’t Stop’ which is one of their biggest awards to date since being signed by Capitol Records earlier this year.
3. Ed Sheeran winning his first American award
At long last, it has finally happened. Ed won his first American award and was the only Briton to actually win a VMA this year and made us very proud in doing so. Ed won Best Male video, beating out the likes of Pharrell Williams, John Legend and Eminem.
4. Nicki Minaj’s wardrobe malfunction
Nicki experienced a bit of a dress problem during her performance of ‘Bang Bang’ alongside Ariana Grande and Jessie J. Having to change from one outfit due to performing ‘Anaconda’ just a few minutes before she was due back on stage with her two fellow singers, Nicki didn’t have time to zip her dress up. However, she later said to the press that there was “no nip slip, so no problem.” Whatever you say, Miss Minaj.
5. BeyonSLAY closing the show
Beyoncé was the winner of the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award and, boy, did she do a job at closing the awards. Queen B performed a 15 minute remix of her album and it was absolutely spectacular. From the choreography, to the outfit and of course, her stunning vocals, Beyoncé brought the VMAs to a close with class, talent and just pure amazement. At the end of the performance, hubby Jay-Z along with their daughter, Blue Ivy, headed up to the stage to present Bey with her award and was a truly touching moment.
