Schoolchildren Clean Up Their Community

Pupils and teachers from Bryn CelynnogComprehensive School celebrated Keep Wales Tidy Week by giving their localcommunity a cleaning blitz of their own.

Headteacher Debbie Baldock joined the children intheir high-viz jackets to pick up litter and clean away the rubbish from thestreets near their school campus.

The group of more than 10 “litter-busters” fromYear 7 and 8 undertook the project as part of a wider-school initiative andlocal residents are likely to see more of them out and about in the comingweeks.

As they trekked through the main road to the localpark the youngsters found all manner of rubbish, from everyday litter to rustypipes, old clothes and even a fridge hidden under trees and nearby bushes.

Together they collected 13kg of litter and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’sStreetcare Team are dealing with any heavy flytipping items found in the area.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Memberfor Environment, Leisure and Sport Cllr Ann Crimmings said, “Flytipping will not be tolerated in Rhondda Cynon Taf and wewill do all in our power to combat such anti-social behaviour in an effort tomake the county borough a cleaner place to live, work and visit.

“The work of the Bryn Celynnog pupils in assisting us in ourendeavours is exemplary and I would like to thank them all for their dedicationand commitment to keeping their community clean and tidy.

“Rhondda Cynon Taf is pioneering in its approach to waste managementand with the support of our young people we want to encourage futuregenerations to beat flytipping and recycle their waste.”

Headteacher Deborah Baldock added, “Staffand students worked very hard to support their local community. We are pleasedto be a part of such an important initiative.”
