The Council are having tomake some very difficult decisions and are thinking of changing the waychildren and young people, who use school buses, get to school. The idea is to nowmake a charge for some bus journeys, that children had for free before.

At the moment 7,000 childrenand young people have free transport to school when the Council have noresponsibility to provide it for free. Therefore they have come up with some suggestionsfor change and would like to know what you think about them.

At the moment in RhonddaCynon Taf:-

·        Children under 5have free transport if they live more than 1.5 miles away

·        The Council do notHAVE to put on ANY transport

·        Children in Primaryschool have free transport if they live more than 1.5 miles away

·        The Council onlyHAVE to do this if they live more than 2 miles away

·        Young people inSecondary school have free transport if they live more than 2 miles away

·        The Council onlyHAVE to do this if they live more than 3 miles away

·        Young people over16yrs (in school or college) have free transport if they live more than 2 milesaway

·        The Council do notHAVE to put on ANY transport

·        Pupils who go toFaith schools have free transport if they live more than 1.5 miles away(Primary School) and 2 miles away (Secondary School)

·        The Council do notHAVE to put on ANY transport

·        Children and youngpeople with special educational needs have free transport as they need it andthere are no plans to change this

Suggestions for changes:

The Government says thatCouncil transport MUST be:

·        Free for Primaryschool children who live more than 2 miles away

·        Free for Secondaryschool young people who live more than 3 miles away

But do not have totransport children under 5yrs or young people over 16yrs

The Council would like tokeep the transport as it is but with a charge for the extra miles e.g:

·        Primary school pupillives 2 miles away, they would have free transport

·        Primary school pupillives 1.5 -2 miles away, they would pay £1.75 per day

·        Primary school pupillives 1.5 -2 miles away and has free school meals, would pay £1 per day

·        Primary Faith schoolpupils living more than 2 miles away, and the Faith school is the nearest schoolto you, would have free transport

·        Primary Faith schoolpupils living more than 1.5 miles away, and where there is non-faith schoolnearer, would pay £1.75 per day (£1 for free school meals pupils)

·        Primary Faith schoolpupils living between 1.5 and 2 miles away, but the Faith school is thenearest, would pay £1.75 per day (£1 for pupils who receive free school meals)

·        Secondary schoolpupil lives 3 miles away, would have free transport

·        Secondary schoolpupil lives 2 miles away, would pay £1.75 per day

·        Secondary schoolpupil lives 2 miles away and has free school meals, would pay £1 per day

·        Secondary Faithschool pupil lives more than 3 miles away, would have free transport

·        Secondary Faithschool pupil lives more than 2 miles away, and where there is a non-faithschool nearer, would pay £1.75 per day (£1 for free school meals pupils)

·        Secondary Faithschool pupil lives between 2 and 3 miles away, where the Faith school is thenearest, would pay £1.75 per day (£1 for free school meals pupils)
