Peter Quill and his ragtag gang are back for a sequel of the highest grossing superhero film of 2014, raking in $773.3 million worldwide, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. I enjoyed this film a lot, but it wasn’t as good as the original movie. There is fun to be had as the team of renegade space pirates return with some hilarious scenes and impressive action sequences.
The Guardians are hired by an advanced alien race to protect their precious batteries from invaders. Rocket makes a huge mistake when it is discovered that he has stolen the items they were sent to guard. The alien race, the Sovereign, release their armada to search for revenge. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter’s Father is revealed.
It is a galaxy of colour, every scene in the movie is sprinkled with lights and impressive CGI. Every colour of the rainbow is exploded into every scene which makes it look amazing – every pixel looks like a twinkling star! Although, sometimes it does get a bit much and you feel like you need a breather from the firework show.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 has an awesome soundtrack full of hits from the 70s and 80s. It’s available to buy and I do recommend a listen to it on Spotify. Whatever it was you loved about the first movie, whether it was the funny banter between the different characters, the jukebox soundtrack or Groot (the tree that can only say “I am Groot”), all of these things were put into the sequel, but with just about enough to keep it fresh.
Chris Pratt shines again and shows off his superb acting ability with some emotional, comedic and action scenes. Zoe Saldana’s Gamora is one of the best parts of the film with her serious comments and embarrassment over all of the other “idiots”. Dave Bautista has great character development because he starts understanding comedy. Bradley Cooper as rocket raccoon is the, again, the most likeable yet annoying character ever. Vin Diesel voices baby Groot, the character who is definitely the most adorable character in all of the Marvel Universe because of his child-like behaviour, great dance moves, and his anger-fuelled attack mode. Kurt Russel portrays Peter’s Dad and Karen Gillen as Nebula were both brilliant and evil.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is a very fun movie with a great ending. It looks amazing, has awesome tunes and great acting. It doesn’t quite live up to the ratings of the last film, but that would have been a very hard job to complete. The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is very exciting and who knows how everything will tie together in the next Avengers movie!
