5×60 is a national sport initiative unique to Wales. 5×60 is changing the face of school sport providing opportunities for young people to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
The core aim of the 5×60 initiative is to see 90% of young people taking part in regular physical activity, thus achieving 5 x 60 minutes of sport or physical activity a week.
Within Rhondda Cynon Taf there are currently twelve 5×60 Officers working in clusters and 1 special school across borough. The 5×60 initiative is apart of Services for Young People (SFYP) and works collaboratively with the e3+ programme. The 5×60 Officer’s role is to facilitate an extra curricular programme with an aim to encourage those who do not take part in sport or physical activity to get active. This is achieved through consultation with young people to find out what activities they want to take part in, the time of activities and the day in which the activity will be delivered. Through consultation a host of exciting activities are organised each term and can take place before school, at lunch time, after school and at the weekends, all of which contribute to the e3+ programme.
Activities currently offered include;
Canoeing / Kayaking
5×60 Officers will also work with key partners in the Local Authority such as, the Detatched Youth Team and Sports Development, to ensure that activities are also provided in community settings.
By getting involved in the 5×60 programme in schools, young people can;
Develop ownership of the opportunities that they have selected
Enjoy physical activity
Experience new opportunities, learn and develop new skills and also gain further qualifications
Help deliver and organise the activities
Participate in lifelong activity in whatever form they enjoy.
