I am writing this message to tell you that will cease to exist on April 1st 2013, after three amazing years as part of the CLIConline network. We’d like to thank all our contributors, staff and much more, it’s been WICID.

That, my dear Wicidites, is an example of how NOT to do an April Fool’s Day joke, as it’s really not all that funny. And a tip to you; there is no such thing as breaking up with somebody as an ‘April Fool’s’. They won’t see the funny side and you’ll be single. I’d also steer away from death, divorce, chronic illness, serious accidents and hurtful gossip. That being said, I love that for one day, the world has to somewhat find a collective sense of humour.

April Fool’s Day is celebrated on April 1st in Britain and in some countries across Europe. The origin of the day is unclear; precursors to the day include March 22nd in which the Romans celebrated the ‘Festival of Hilaria‘, which honoured the end of the cycle of Cybele, the Mountain God. This was also the first day of the year which was longer than the night, so no signs of sorrow were allowed to be shown. Another is the Medieval ‘Festival of Fools’ celebrated in Spain, France, Poland, Belgium, England and some other countries in Europe; the idea was to express power over the inferior and often parodied the higher officers of the church, enthroning ‘The Bishop of Fools’ amongst others.

Modern scholars note that Chaucer refers to April Fool’s Day in ‘The Canterbury Tales’ (1392) when the Nun tells the story of the cockerel that was tricked by a fox: ‘Syn march gon thritty days and two’.

April 1st 1638 was the first British reference to ‘Fooles holy day’ where the Tower of London sent fake invitations to several people, for the ‘Ceremony of the Washing of the Lion’ (this, Wicidites, made me actually laugh out loud!). I love Britain, I can just imagine men and women dressed up like classic Elizabethans, looking confused and tutting!

In good humour of the day, please comment below with YOUR best April Fool’s story and let’s see if we can make it onto this list – the 10 best April Fool’s Day hoaxes.

I absolutely hate April fools. It’s just full of girls telling their boyfriends they’re pregnant. It’s second on my worst days of the year list after Valentine’s day. Ugh.

I’m absolutely RUBBISH at April Fools jokes! But last night when my friend went to bed, I took a screenshot of a Twitcam video of two of our favorite singers and I posted it on her wall and was like “OMG OMG OMG! I FOUND THEIR SKYPE! I TOOK A SCREENSHOT OF THEM ON CAM!” But she didn’t fall for it. Dammit!

Also, the whole of the Murs Army tried winding up Olly by “cloning” his Twitter, basically changing our icons and names to his and then tweeting like him, but he was too busy to notice! Haha! Last year, though, he did this which fooled most of us.

l really want to pull a good one next year, but I have absolutely no ideas whatsoever! x
