We know at WICID that we have talented and enthusiastic young people all over Rhondda Cynon Taf, in each community, and we know this because we get to meet them all the time!

Below is a catch-up with Bonnie Griffiths who is a Sports Wales Youth Ambassador. Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Youth Engagement and Participation Service (YEPS) and Sports Wales work together to provide free lunchtime, after-school and evening activities for the young people of RCT through the 5×60 programme.

Here, Bonnie tells us a bit more about herself and the role.

Name: Bronnie Griffiths
(on the left in the picture)

School: Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun

Home Town: Aberdare, RCT

Young Ambassador level: Gold Young Ambassador

I have been a YA since : May 2015

What has been your favourite moment as a YA so far?

“My favourite moment so far has been working with participants of all abilities and ages at the recent Wheelchair Sport Spectacular in Cardiff. I became involved after attending Disability Inclusion Training in my local authority, and was offered the opportunity to volunteer at the event. Myself and another Silver YA from my school went along and found it to be a fantastic opportunity and volunteered for over 40 hours over the four day event.”

What are your main roles as a Young Ambassador in your school/ community?

“I am a Gold Young Ambassador for my school and RCT, but also am involved in a number of different opportunities such as being a Young Leader for Duke of Edinburgh, leader in training for Girl Guiding Cymru, Silver Hockey YA and a coach for Urdd Gobaith Cymru.

As a Gold YA my aim is for pupils to get hooked on sport for life from a younger age. To do this I speak at school assemblies, organise after school sessions in different sports such as weight-lifting, free-running and volleyball, and also promote community clubs such as swimming to parents and pupils who may not otherwise be aware that they are running.”

Who is your sporting hero and why?

“My inspiration has to be Tanni Grey-Thompson. I love her passion for sport and her attitude that if she can do it as a disabled person, anyone can. I really like her personality and her determination, and this has inspired me from a young age.”

What do you hope to achieve as a YA?

“I just want to keep enjoying the experience as a Young Ambassador and want others to see participants like myself and other Young Ambassadors out there who want to see other young people enjoying sport. Any rewards or recognition I receive along the way would just be a bonus to me.”

What is your favourite Quote/saying?

“There is no such word as ‘can’t’.”
