Dartmoor has been conquered by the intrepid DofE team! DofE Development Officer Kerry Rees writes:
The past week has seen our Gold Explorer Scouts spend 4 days toiling across Dartmoor – through fog, rain, thunder, and extreme sun and heat – to successfully complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition.
James Shilton, Scout Leader and Support Crew member, said: “The participants improved on speed every day, and I’m really proud of them pushing through and finishing with smiles on their faces, and Danni and Charlotte wore “pixie tutus” all week!
They are definitely gold medallists and we got them chocolate Olympic medals to prove it!”
The Gold Expedition is the ultimate Teamwork challenge within the DofE Award, where the group has to plan, prepare, and undertake a journey in ‘wild country’, unaccompanied and maintaining self-reliance, using their skills and physical abilities honed during training and practice over previous months. They are assessed by an independent assessor from the area they travel in.
The undertaking requires a great deal of commitment and determination, and the Explorer Scouts from Miskin and Hirwaun have proved they are up there with the best!
Congratulations to you all!
And a great many thanks to their DofE Leaders, Andy Rees and James Shilton, volunteers whose on-going commitment and patience ensure the Expedition Groups are fully prepared for the challenge, and without whom it would not be possible.
