Stress Awareness Day takes place on 6th November. It is the 15th National Stress Awareness Day, which celebrates help people to beat stress.

Modern life is full of frustrations, hassles and deadlines (at home, work or school/college). Some think of it as a way of life.

What is stress?: It is a feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. Stress can affect how you behave, how your body works, to how you feel inside. 

You may feel that there is nothing you can do about stress, but you have more control than you think, taking charge of your emotions, thoughts and the way you deal with problems. 

There are many things that can cause stress:

• Being bullied/exposed to injury or violence.

• Relationships/family arguments.

• Illness/bereavement. 

• School demands i.e. schoolwork, exams.

• Moving schools/transition.

• Separation of parents.

• Problems with friends and/or peers at school.

Signs of being stressed: The most common signs of stress can include sweating, loss of appetite, becoming irritable and moody, problems sleeping and difficulty concentrating, especially at exam times and some people also experience headaches and stomach pains which can also be stress-related. Some people are even seen to lose their temper more easily.

Managing stress: Stress is not seen to be an illness, but if not addressed it can cause a serious illness. By recognising the symptoms and signs of stress early on it can help you from getting into unhealthy coping methods such as smoking, alcohol and possibly drugs, and also from causing any serious complications such as high blood pressure.

To help cope and manage stress more effectively, learn how to relax, take regular exercise and adopt good time-management techniques. Always try and talk about your issues or concerns which can help control your stress levels.
