So, I’ve been out a while from writing and doing other things I enjoy because my girlfriend is pregnant. She’s due in August, 2015.
With me only being 19 and her being even younger at 17, I thought I’d take a look at some teenage pregnancy facts. This is what information I’ve come across.
Despite being one of the biggest countries to use contraception, Britain remains the highest teenage pregnancy rating within western Europe. It is to be believed that 4 out of 5 women in the UK use some sort of contraception which totals to 80 per cent. That is an extremely large number compared to 76 per cent in the U.S., 75 per cent in France and 59 per cent in Japan.
Britain has a hugely high rating of nearly every three girls in one hundred who give birth between the ages of 15 and 19 each year. This number decreases enormously when compared to France, where there are less contraceptive use but just under one women of every one hundred aged 15 to 19 have babies. The level in Germany is that just over one woman per hundred have babies at the same age, while in Japan it’s the very low rating of barely one girl per hundred giving birth between the ages of 15 and 19.
48,000 babies were born in the UK to teenage mothers last year – resulting in one-hundred and twenty-eight million pounds being spent from the tax payer on giving out income support alone. This is without calculating the council tax and housing benefit.
Many believe that young teenagers in Britain now believe that sexual intercourse is the main part of a relationship, and that they don’t focus on much else. This compared to the rest of Europe and America is very bad. I know my girlfriend and I are having a baby at young ages, but at least I’m working and still attending college so whereas she might need some money from the tax-payer due to my wages not being high enough to support us we aren’t completely relying on the tax payer for it all. We are still providing for ourselves and will strive to make our little girl’s life the best it possibly can be, and so do most of the teenage mothers and fathers out there.
