Bullying on the school bus

I am one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I'm always nice to people's faces even if they bully me. Recently on the bus to school/home a boy has been picking on me. He has been hitting me with belts and bottles. What should I do?

Hello Dear,

I’m so glad that you’ve got in touch with me. It sounds like you’re having a really horrible time. What this boy has been doing to you is totally unacceptable and needs to stop and even though you pride yourself on being a nice person you shouldn’t have to put up with anybody treating you like this.

It’s important that you remember that what is happening to you is not your fault and doesn’t reflect on what you are like as a person. It is clear that this boy is the one with the issue not you. Have you thought about talking to this boy about the way his behavior is making you feel as he may not know that it is having this impact on you? This is not being nasty but is actually called being assertive and is an important skill to practice in order to let people know what behavior you will and will not put up with.

If you don’t feel happy to talk to this boy yourself have you considered telling someone about what you have been going through on the bus? This could be the bus driver or escort on the bus as they have a duty to look after you while you are on the bus, but this could also be whoever you feel most comfortable to talk to like a teacher or mum and dad. As this boy is picking on you on your way to and from school this is an issue that your school has a responsibility to deal with. Every school should have an anti-bullying policy and it should be no different with your school. The school may be able to work with the bus company to help tackle the problem.
