Tobacco harms smokers, non-smokers and the society

The most basic fact about tobacco use still has the power to shock:

One in every two regular smokers die as a result of tobacco. For others, the quality of life is highly compromised.

The Tobacco Industry, in its various shapes and forms, is directly responsible for 1.6 million deaths per year.

The consequences of tobacco go beyond only that of the smoker. Exposure to tobacco can kill non-smokers, as well as harm pregnant women and their babies.

The momentum is growing, and more and more governments are taking strong measures to fight tobacco – including through taxation and pricing, advertising, packaging, warnings, smoking in public places and supporting people who want to kick the habit.

Smoking remains a major contributory factor to the gap in mortality and healthy life expectancy between the most and least advantaged. Currently, 5.4 million people die each year from the global tobacco epidemic. The death toll is rising relentlessly and in two decades will reach over 8 million a year. Unless serious action is taken, it is estimated that up to 1 billion people could die from tobacco use during the 21st century.

Smoking takes its toll on your looks

Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. It causes many diseases and reduces quality of life and life expectancy. The younger a person quits, the greater the benefit but stopping smoking is beneficial at any age. Many smokers think that smoking helps relieve stress but in fact ex-smokers are more likely to have better mental health and be happier.
